Comfort Care Through Medical Massage by Roberta Brown Brugo, RN, LMT

Some time ago, a terminally ill cancer patient at Greenwich Hospital received daily medical massage, offered to the patient by the team of licensed massage therapists who visit patients five days a week. The therapeutic massage complements medical treatment provided by the patient's physician and nurses. This patient's wife couldn't wait until her husband received his massage during the last four weeks of his life. Initially, he would respond with a nod or smile, showing that he was enjoying the massage. However, towards the end of his life he was basically resting and receiving the gentle and compassionate touch on a deeper level. The therapist shared that on one of the last times she massaged the patient, he was becoming weaker and was experiencing labored breathing. His doctor entered the room to talk to his wife. As the physician chatted with her, the patient was receiving the massage and his breathing went from labored breathing to quiet and peaceful. It was then that the physician stopped, looked over and acknowledged the massage therapist by saying, "What department do you work for?" She replied, "Integrative Medicine.” He complimented what she was doing and as he left the room, he said, "Keep up the great work!" The patient passed shortly after this last massage and everyone was confident that his last few days and hours were peaceful, shared with his family and caring professionals at his bedside. It is amazing how a prescription of comfort care, compassion and loving touch can make a world of difference in a patient's and family’s life.
