Integrative Medicine Consultations

Provides holistic and integrative medicine consultations for men, women, children and elders facing challenges of chronic disease or seeking optimal health. Advanced skills include intravenous vitamin therapy, acupuncture, integrative pediatrics, hormone balancing and replacement therapy, integrative pain therapy and age-deceleration therapies.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is very useful in treating chronic pain as well as anxiety and depression. It can help you get the best results from conventional medical treatments related to cancer, lymphodema, fertility, menopause, nausea, fatigue and insomnia. The Center for Integrative Medicine offers Traditional Chinese Medicine, classical Chinese acupuncture, Japanese-style acupuncture, auricular (ear) acupuncture, Chinese scalp acupuncture, medical acupuncture, and Chinese herbal formulations

Biofeedback

Biofeedback helps individuals learn to reduce stress and use changes in their heart rate to recognize and release unhealthy thought patterns that cause personal distress. We have successfully used this technique with adolescents, adults, and elders who find themselves living with anxiety, stress, and worry that disrupt their sleep, interfere with their relationships, and create disease. Learn to “control” certain unhealthy automatic responses as you influence your body’s involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature and muscle tension.

Chiropractic Services

Chiropractic medicine provides holistic solutions for pain resolution and movement through traditional manipulation and leading-edge treatments. Structural imbalances can often be remedied by making small changes. Leg length discrepancy, pelvic tilt, scoliosis and abnormalities of the feet are considered among these imbalances during a chiropractic examination. We also check for weak or uncompensated muscles, which may contribute to pain or sub-optimal function of the musculoskeletal system.

Specialized Chiropractic Services

Graston Technique with Dr. Amy O'Donnell
This instrument-assisted technique is used to detect and treat over-use or trauma injuries that result in the build-up of adhesions and scar tissue, particularly in soft tissue such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Often combined with exercise and acupuncture, the Graston Technique is effective in restoring normal function or range of motion as well as eliminating pain. For an appointment, call (203) 863-2944.

Structural Alignment Evaluation with Dr. Amy O'Donnell
This analysis determines whether a functional problem with a particular part of your body – such as feet, knees, hips, back, shoulders, neck – has caused you to move in a way that has lead to other muscle or skeletal problems. In some cases pain may exist in one area, but the cause may be elsewhere. Looking along what is referred to as the “kinetic chain” can help determine the underlying cause. Legs that are different lengths, pelvic tilt, scoliosis, and feet abnormalities are specifically taken into consideration, as well as weak or compensated muscles that may contribute to pain or other difficulties. For an appointment, call (203) 863-2944.

Constitutional Health Evaluation

Do you have recurring pain in a specific area that continues despite treatment? Or your doctor can’t pinpoint the cause, yet you know something just isn’t right? The Center for Integrative Medicine’s constitutional health evaluation is a unique service that looks beyond the lab work and the symptoms and is designed to help you achieve radiant health and maintain optimal function. It can identify basic imbalances within the body’s flow of life force and weaknesses in functionality of basic biochemical systems before they become symptoms.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral therapy adjusts the subtle pulses of the cerebrospinal fluid as it circulates around the brain and spinal cord. Using light, sensitive touch, the therapist monitors the flow to locate restrictions and gently release them. This delicate, soothing therapy encourages optimal fluid movement that nourishes all tissues of the body, causing a self-correcting response. The result is a deep sense of calm, well-being and self awareness. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing for this hour-long, whole-body treatment.

Environmental Health Assessments

Parents are beginning to recognize the risks of toxic exposures to the health of their children, starting in utero and continuing throughout life. In response, the Center for Integrative Medicine offers a wide range of environmental assessments to test for acute and chronic heavy metal exposures, hydrocarbon exposures, exposure to molds, hidden and direct food-based sensitivities and pathogens. Detoxification treatments and services are available.

Feng Shui

When designing a truly holistic environment in which to treat patients, the Center for Integrative Medicine consulted Feng Shui Master Elspeth Anne Beier. Elspeth’s deep understanding of the healing powers of this ancient practice is palpable upon entering The Center. Each area possesses a unique energetic footprint designed to enhance the work taking place within. Matching form and function with the proper balance of colors, shapes and pathways, Elspeth enables the qi, or life energy, to move with greater ease thereby promoting wellness for all who enter.

Ms. Beier now offers Feng Shui service, for both personal and professional environments, through the Center for Integrative Medicine. Her clients include Fortune 500 companies, hedge funds, medical facilities and businesses wanting to thrive more vibrantly, as well as individuals and families seeking greater ease and connection within their own homes.

Elspeth Beier holds master-level degrees from The Feng Shui Research Center in Toronto, Canada and a three-year degree from the Professional School of Feng Shui in San Francisco. She received additional education in Psychology and Art from Southern Methodist University and University of Michigan. Her work is widely respected by fellow Feng Shui Masters and clients worldwide. Her more than 30 years of study, teaching and practice in Chinese philosophy and astrology, Feng Shui, taiji and meditation afford her clients highly intuitive, finely tuned guidance in creating harmonious, balanced, prosperous surroundings in which to work and live.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, Elspeth managed holistic health centers in southern California and Manhattan in addition to her private practice.

NEW! Feng Shui Wellness Consultations

The Center of Integrative Medicine is pleased to offer the expertise of Elspeth Beier’s feng shui consultations for your home and business. Those who have been in the Center have a first hand experience of some of the benefits to this ancient natural science. Very often, our health or our children’s health issues are addressed in an office, when in fact some of the difficulties are in the home itself.

Each consultation requires gathering background information, such a floor plan, the year the business or home was built, any time periods when either difficulties or prosperities existed, and any health problems or concerns. Once the information is gathered, and the analysis is done, Elspeth will spend about three hours with you. This will take place in your home or business, to assist in making where you live and work more functional and supportive.

Clients request this service for various reasons. Some need help for teenagers dealing with depression. Other families sense stagnation in communication. Businesses that had loss of revenues when they moved (or need to), or staff conflicts are other reasons why people seek feng shui help. Sometimes, it is the location in which the individual is sleeping or working that is unsupportive.

Becoming masterful at this art and natural science takes years. It is not something you can just read about, or listen to a lecture and be able to energize and balance your home any more than doing your own dentistry. None of us are truly objective to our personal environments or ourselves.

Our surroundings have a large influence on our function and our health. It can be what is called a ‘tipping force’. You may feel a bit out of sorts, or a bit depleted or like you are living in chaos. If this is corrected in your surroundings, your chance of lifting up out of distress, or dis-ease is greatly increased.

This traditional feng shui practice dates back nearly six thousand years and is extremely precise in its approach. Its orientation is based on mathematics and physics. It is as accurate as acupuncture is for the body. This is acupuncture for space. You will find this completely fascinating, informative, eye opening and immediately helpful. Integrative medicine is dedicated to treating the whole, the body, the mind and the spirit. A home is the reflection of those who live there, so including it in the equation is extremely important. If the dwelling is healthy, everyone in it will benefit and thrive. Consultation fee is $945.00. Follow-ups are $225.00 per hour

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medical evaluation and treatment that considers symptoms as the body's way of acknowledging disease challenges. Rather than suppressing symptoms, homeopathy pairs them with remedies in a way that encourages the body's rapid return to balance and health. Treatment involves giving very small doses of substances, called remedies, that would produce correlating symptoms of illness if given in larger doses. This stimulates the body's natural defense mechanisms to heal itself and prevent illness. Particularly useful in treating children, viral illnesses, and complicated chronic diseases, homeopathy often can spare the use of antibiotics.

NEW! Life Mapping

With Elspeth Anne Beier, Feng Shui Consultant
Life is a journey with many different phases, some more creative, alert and energized, while at others are more stagnant and difficult.

The natural science used by all of the Chinese healing arts, acupuncture, herbology, feng shui, taiji etc. is based on the “five phases of life energy”. When we take our first breath, the influence of whatever phase is present creates a kind of fingerprint of possibilities for each of us. Whether luck, challenge, joy, guilt, or some other descriptor accompanies us in our life, “the five phases of life energy” may explain just why that might be true. These “five phases” can also indicate which organs or systems in the body may be more prone to injury.

Life Mapping consultations are as intricate as they are fascinating. The advantages of knowing yourself better from a completely different vantage point is invaluable, particularly as you at what type of energy is currently operating and what is on the horizon. By analyzing your life map, you will have a better understanding of your natural gifts and the best timing to express them.

This ‘mapping’ includes the influence of time and place as well as how your life circumstances affect you. For example, if you came into this world without having a lot of self confidence or family support, and encounter a number of obstacles preventing success, then developing an awareness of how to change those circumstances can be life-altering.

A Life Mapping consultation is designed to be awakening, informative, thought provoking and life altering. Knowledge is power, and that knowledge, coupled with good timing, leads to success. Life Maps take several hours to prepare before an appointment, and a consultation will be an hour or more. This work allows for increased understanding of yourself and suggests what you can do to optimize your life and your health.

Medication and Supplement Consultations

Many elders take more than two medications to control medical disease or symptoms. In addition, it’s common for people to take multiple herbs, vitamins, minerals, and supplements to enhance their health. When a person combines more than five medications, supplements, herbals or botanicals of any type, the risk for interactions and side effects greatly increases. These interactions and side effects can lead to more symptoms that need to be treated.

This new service, offered for free to anyone over the age of 65, is designed to check your medications, herbs, supplements, vitamins, and minerals in order to identify potential interactions among them. Our Natural Pharmacist will review the information you submit and identify issues of concern.

Appointments are scheduled in 15-minute intervals on Wednesday afternoons. You will be asked to submit a written list of ailments or diagnoses, your list of medications (including over-the-counter) and dosages, and your list of herbs, vitamins, minerals, and supplements. Our pharmacist will identify any potential issues. You may then choose to establish an appointment at the Center with one of our physicians or you may take the information to your primary care provider in order to refine your daily pharmaceutical and nutraceutical medication schedule.

Please keep in mind that no new supplements will be ordered and symptoms will not be treated as part of this service. This service is designed to facilitate medication reduction while maintaining or enhancing health

Integrative nutrition goes beyond traditional counts of calories, carbohydrates, protein and fats. “Food as Medicine” is the focus of this unique approach to eating well to feel your best. We address a person’s individual chemistry and constitution by identifying the underlying cause of the imbalance, the inherited metabolic strengths and weakness, and the effects of lifestyle and the environment. Our service can also help you identify unhealthy additives and preservatives in your family’s food.
